As the owner of a baby and kid food website, I'm always searching for creative ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into snacks and meals. The social media viral sensation featuring grated frozen fruit instantly caught my eye. I believe the original TikTok video was shared by Frankie Gaw of the blog Little Fat Boy, where he grated frozen strawberries into a bowl and topped them with condensed milk, crushed peanuts, and black sesame seeds.
For our littlest eaters, I opted to skip the condensed milk and instead serve a variety of grated fruits with protein-rich yogurt for a more balanced and healthier snack/dessert.

Ingredient Information
The great thing about this recipe is that you have the freedom to experiment with different fruits. Choose ones that freeze well and are large enough for easy grating.
Some fruits I've tried with good results include:
- Strawberry
- Pineapple
- Cantaloupe (rock melon)
- Watermelon
- Peach
- Mango
Feel free to get adventurous and try other fresh fruit that freeze well, such as:
- Kiwi
- Orange
- Banana
I used Greek Yogurt as the base of the snack but this is optional, other suggestions for toppings and bases are given below.
Step by Step Instructions
- Prepare and Freeze the Fruit:
- Begin by preparing your chosen fruits, cutting them into large pieces. For certain fruits like strawberries, you can keep them whole. Freeze the fruit overnight to ensure it's thoroughly chilled.
- Grate:
- Once the fruit is frozen, the transformation into light and fluffy fruit ice is a breeze.
- Optimal results are achieved using a fine grater. A microplane grater provides a fluffier texture, but you can also use the fine part of a box grater or the grater attachment on your food processor.
Top Tips
- Opt for larger fruit pieces to make grating easier. When slicing watermelon, I prefer leaving the rind on to use as a convenient handle.
- For the best experience, enjoy shaved fruit immediately. Its fluffy, cold goodness melts quickly, so serve it straight away.
Serving Suggestions
- Explore Fruit Combinations: Get creative with combinations! Mix a variety of fruits for a beautiful bowl of rainbow-shaved ice with a flavour explosion to match.
- Creamy Base: Use frozen fruit shaved ice as a topping for yogurt or ice cream.
- Sweet Additions: For those craving extra sweetness, consider a drizzle of condensed milk, maple syrup, or honey. Perfect for older kids or adults seeking a sweet touch.
- Extra Toppings: Experiment with various toppings. Add a creamy touch with coconut milk or fresh cream, a zesty punch with lemon or lime zest, a crunch with nuts, seeds, or coconut flakes, or a burst of freshness with some fresh mint.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, from six months. As the frozen fruit is grated it no longer has the same choking risk. Serve the shaved fruit ice as is or mix with a little of your baby's milk for a creamy texture. If they have been safely introduced to dairy then mixing with the yogurt is also an option.
I do not recommend preparing this recipe in advance since it tends to melt quickly. If stored in the freezer ahead of time, it can solidify completely and will lose the fluffy texture.
